Preventing “Stuck” and “Buried” Drilling Tools

Preventing “Stuck” and “Buried” Drilling Tools
  • Gradual Advancement: Never apply excessive downward pressure too quickly. In layered formations or quicksand, aggressive cutting can cause borehole wall cave-ins or clog the bucket, burying the tool.
  • Suction Effect Mitigation: When pulling the bucket out of cohesive clay, a negative pressure vacuum can form underneath it. Operators must lift the Kelly bar slowly at first to allow the bottom valves to open and equalize pressure.
  • Load Monitoring: Watch the main winch tension and monitor the rig’s display panel constantly; stop immediately if the lifting force peaks abnormally.
